Rad Plaid – Festive Fall Dining

Rad Plaid Feature - Designing Dawn on @Remodelaholic

Hello and happy November! I’m Dawn, from DesigningDawn.com, back again with another monthly mood-board for your decoration inspiration. If you’ve missed any of my previous inspiration posts here on Remodelaholic, you can always check those out here.

Even though fall means the temperatures are dropping here in the Midwest, for me, autumn always conjures thoughts of warmth. Something about the happiness of harvest time, the approaching holidays, turning on the fireplace for the first time, and snuggling down under a cozy blanket with a hot cup of coffee… ahhh, I love you, Fall!

Visually, I associate this time with warmth too. As in warm colors all around. The green fields all turn to gold, and everywhere you look there are red leaves, orange pumpkins, and yellow mums. And nothing screams fall more than a brilliant plaid that weaves all these warm colors together. There really is no better cool weather pattern in my mind. If you’re not on board yet, you will be after these inspiration shots!

For my inspiration board this month, I naturally decided to go with a dining room. Thanksgiving is such a special time with family and friends, so putting together a festive space for gathering together to celebrate seemed like the perfect choice.

Tips for Decorating with Plaid

To get that welcoming, homey vibe, I started out with warm colored plaids mixed with rich textured neutrals, like the subtle but beautiful rug and some sleek comfy dining chairs. I also added in a healthy dose of natural elements, like a beautiful walnut harvest table, the amazing woven vintage baskets, and the unique log serving platter (how fun would it be to carve turkey on that thing?).

I had fun with decorative elements in this board, since the holidays are one time when you can really get creative with decor that maybe isn’t something you’d use everyday. For example, how cute and perfect are those pinecone tea lights? And can’t you just picture forks, knives, and spoons at the ready and on display in those colorful rustic buckets? I love it when decorative elements incorporate both form and function!

One of my favorite things about decorating with plaid is that it doesn’t have to match exactly. In fact, if it’s too matchy, it looks forced and cold. My favorite way to incorporate plaid is to use several different patterns with similar color palettes. If you look closely, you’ll even notice some elements on this board that suggest a plaid pattern, but very subtly. The cross pattern in the mirror, for example. Or the etched grid of the curtains (those curtains!!). They all tie together, but look collected, cozy, and inviting.
