How to Decorate Walls as a Minimalist
Minimalism doesn’t mean a space has to remain empty. Dial back the quantity and increase the quality when it comes to the artwork, sculpture, shelving, paint, and other wall décor you use in your home. Apply a few of these tips to design something great and start to decorate walls in your minimalist home with less fuss!

Focus on color
Color is an obvious go-to when you want to add to a space without adding to your possessions. Paint a wall in a bold color if you want to make it the main attraction in a room, or use a softer color if you plan to add art. Art is a great way to add color and it can really tie a room together when used to compare colors for other elements such as furniture and rugs.

Focus on shape
A space with little personality can be given a quick punch by playing with shapes on the wall. Shelving built in fun shapes can be functional and decorative at the same time, which is a bonus for minimalists. Try these DIY “honeycomb” shelves if you’ve got a way with tools. Sculpture and art are also great ways to add shapes to a wall. For quality art at lower prices, search sites like Etsy for up-an-coming artists.

Focus on texture
A textured wall can be the focal point of a room and often needs little else. Wood, brick, stone, and board and batten or other wall add-ons can all bring a touch of décor without adding long-term maintenance like that required by furniture and knick-knacks. If a full wall of texture seems a bit overwhelming, another option is to use textured wall hangings or try a fun wall décor project like this macramé creation.

Focus on size
“Go big or go home” is a phrase worth remembering when it comes to minimalist wall design. If you’ve got a lot of space, one of the easiest ways to fill it is with a something big, whether it’s art, a mirror, shelving, or hey, even a television. If a single piece doesn’t appeal to you, try choosing a collection of smaller items, but keep the collection small to stay in line with minimalism.

Focus on contrast
Contrasting colors, textures, and shapes draw the eye in with minimal effort. A large mirror against a wall, a bright painting on neutral colors, or a wall-hanging with bold patterns on a plain background are all simple ways to add decorative contrast to your walls.

Focus on meaning
Rather than decorating your walls with something new, take a look into some of the boxes you may have containing family heirlooms and photographs. Consider enlarging and framing photos, hanging homemade quilts, or placing other sentimental items on simple shelves. Limit yourself to a few of your most meaningful items but let your history and personality show. In the end, these are the things that make any house a home.
