Real Life Rooms: Basic Laundry Room Makeover to Add Storage and Character
Hey there Remodelaholic readers! Dawn here, from AD Aesthetic, and I’m back this month with another reader question mockup to hopefully inspire some creative ideas for a basic laundry room makeover. If you’ve missed any of my previous reader question mockups, you can always see all my posts here.
If you follow Remodelaholic on Facebook, you’ve probably seen several of the reader questions that are submitted every month. Well each month here on Remodelaholic, I choose one reader submitted photo to offer my two cents on, and I create a Photoshop mock up of what I would do if I were in your shoes! First though, my standard disclaimer: While I can recommend ideas that I think look nice, I have never seen this house in real life and don’t have accurate measurements. I am also not an architect or landscaper and do not know the planting recommendations for your area- I just like to make things look nice. I can’t guarantee that any of the items I put in my ‘virtual’ design will actually work in real life (or that they’ll fit your design style for that matter), and this is not intended to be a professional design consultation. So think of this as a just-for-fun rendering that hopefully gets your wheels turning and provides some inspiration!

READER QUESTION from Shayna —
I have no built-in storage and would like to add some. The washer/dryer are huge 34d x 40h. The room is 6×8 and only has a laundry sorter and trash can currently. What should I put in here?! And where?
This room has so much potential! As someone who’s laundry room is literally a closet, I would LOVE to have a full room dedicated to laundry. Although, let’s be real, it would just be a full room filled with clothes I didn’t fold, so maybe not. Haha! But seriously, I was anxious to put together an idea for Shayna’s laundry space. First though, I gathered some inspiration from other small-ish laundry rooms on the internet.

Tips for A Small Laundry Room Makeover
Here are a few things to keep in mind when decorating a laundry space, especially if it is on the smaller side.
Avoid Clutter
I love color and decor, so I tend to be a bit of a ‘stuff’ collector. The laundry room is one space, however, that I try to keep as minimal as possible. In a space devoted to cleaning, having too much stuff (even if it’s pretty stuff) can make the space feel smaller and cluttered. Keeping horizontal surfaces mostly clear not only makes the space feel orderly, but it also gives you room to fold and sort all those clothes. Win win!
Storage is Key
Avoiding clutter is great, but laundry rooms definitely have a few essentials that need to be in easy reach for functionality’s sake, which is why good laundry storage is really the key to a great laundry room. Whether you opt for open shelving, or built in cabinets, having a place for everything will instantly make the space feel more put together.
Have Fun!
Since this is one area of your home that guests will probably not see regularly, don’t be afraid to experiment, express yourself, and have some fun! Go bolder than you might normally, or try out a color or wallpaper you’ve been too scared to commit to elsewhere. Laundry rooms are usually not super large, so if you hate it, you can always repaint, but you might just find a new style you love!

Have a laundry closet and really liked your ideas as always. A favor if you will. Please ask your web designer for those without perfect eyesight to use black font! Not larger just Black on white background. Colors such as grey are much more difficult to see. Look forward to your next great idea.
Ok my question is because housing in rental community has become so outrageous in my area in southwest Washington above Portland ore. I have to rent out the master bedroom which isn’t such a “master” at all but none the less it has 2 small his and her closets and a tiny bathroom. I have a laundry room the size of the one you have featured above with the pink door. At the end of a small family room Just off of the kitchen which leads to garage. I have made this family room my bedroom. And I’m Just fine and comfortable with. But the laundry room is Just like that size with little space between the wall and the washer and dryer. And to the left of washer have a dingy utility sink and a skinny cabinet next to that. Oh and a window just above the washer and dryer…..sort of just like the picture below the one with pink door. It’s exact combo between the 2…….
My delimma/challenge has been with that space where you have to do laundry in still I also need to use as my closet (enter in shower scene physco music here) ???? it’s such a disaster and not many Google images or Pinterest ideas for laundry room/wardrobe closet floating around out here. Well not any ideas of an older 1960’s ranch style house of 1600sq ft and low ceilings…..you know realistic ideas for people like me in tiny diy decored homes.I only can find pictures of laundry room/closets that are the size of my kids bedroom. Do You have any suggestions? Pic? Ideas? Sketches? Anything? It’s a rental too. But allowed to paint and hang shelves. No remodeling. I’d appreciate any input or suggestion you might have.
